BICYCLE ACCIDENTS
As bicycle traffic has increased, so have fatalities and serious injuries. The Habbas Injury Network represents victims of bicycle accidents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2004, 725 pedalcyclists were killed and 41,000 were injured nationally in traffic crashes. Bicyclist deaths accounted for 2 percent of all traffic fatalities and made up 1 percent of all the people injured in traffic crashes for 2004.
According to a program funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation and published at bicyclinginfo.org, the following are causes and statistics of bicycling accidents:
- 21.6% caused by a motorist failing to yield
- 12.1% caused by a vehicle merging or turning into the path of a cyclist
- 8.6% caused by vehicle overtaking cyclist
In other words, nearly half of all cycling accidents involving a motor vehicle are the fault of the driver rather than the cyclist.
A person injured while cycling is due the same recourse as any other injury, including possible economic and non-economic damages.
